Sommige reguliere frivolité spoeltjes hebben een haaknaaldje of een scherp puntje. Dit kan omdat ze van kunsstof zijn gemaakt.
Kunststof (handwerk) gereedschap vind ik doorgaans erg onprettig om mee te werken, geef mij maar hout!
Het ding met houten frivolité spoeltjes is echter dat een inbegrepen haaknaaldje of scherp puntje van bruikbare kwaliteit naar mijn mening niet mogelijk is.
Frivolité neem ik overal mee naar toe en daarom heb ik een klein reis etuitje speciaal voor frivolité (zie onderaan). Daar kunnen geen normale lengte haaknaalden in. Voorheen had ik al wel eens een ouderwetse haaknaald ingekort om in dit etuitje te kunnen passen.
Nu ik een draaibank heb is het uiteraard leuk om daar handvaatjes voor te maken. Het houd fijner vast en je raakt ze ook nog eens minder snel kwijt.
Inmiddels heb ik een aantal van deze korte haaknaaldjes gemaakt en door ze te gebruiken heb ik steeds beter inzicht in hoe de vorm het fijnste is.
Ook had ik een lange naald waar het oog kapot van was. Die is nu omgetoverd tot 2 prikpennetjes die handig zijn om fouten uit te halen of voor andere kleine pruts klusjes tijdens het frivoliteeën.
Dan is er nog een uiteinde van een dunne paarse haaknaald waarvan ik wil onderzoeken of die ook tot prikpen dienst kan doen. Als dit werkt heb ik een mooi doel voor de rest van de dunne haaknaald uiteindes.
Tot slot ligt er in het midden nog een prikpennetje die eigenlijk bedoeld was als haaknaald. Helaas knapte die, dus toen werd het maar een prikpennetje. Inmiddels weet ik dat dit lang niet mijn beste prikpennetje is.
Oh en het hout dat ik heb gebruikt zijn restjes peer, plataan en valse christusdoorn.

Making small handles for small tools
Some regular tatting shuttles have a little crochet hook or a sharp pointy bit. This is possible because they’re made with plastic.
I don’t like working with plastic in my hands, wood though: Yes please!
A drawback of wooden tatting shuttles is that attaching a short chrochet hook, or adding a sharp pointy bit is possible, … but far from ideal.
Luckily I don’t like those attatched to the tatting shuttles anyway, so no loss there for me. Plus an attached crochet hook comes in one size only!
The thing is though that I take tatting pretty much everywhere, and because of that I have a dedicated little tatting case (see below).
No normal lenght crochet hook fits in there, so previously I’d already shortened one or two old crochet hooks.
Now with a wood lathe they can have small wooden handles: Easier to hold, and easier to find again.
After having made about a handfull, and having used them, I’ve gotten a good idea what shaping works nicest.
There was also a long needle with a broken eye. This I used to make two … paper awls (is that what thay’re called in English?).
Next there was a thin purple chrochet handle that I transformed in the same type of awl, to see if this is a solution for the other left over crochet hook handles.
Lastly, in the middle, there’s a crochet hook that became an awl after it snapped of in the finishing stages.
Oh, really lastly, the wood I used are scrap pieces of pear, plane, and honey locust.
