Nu ik vaker deel neem aan festivals die historische correctheid nastreven vond ik het tijd om in ieder geval ook een goed lint te hebben voor oa. een spinrok, voor in mijn haar en voor afwerking/versiering van een nieuwe viking jurk.
Hiervoor besloot ik om 1 lang lint te maken en die later op te delen. Ik koos ook weer voor kaartweven, maar nu in een kleur met een techniek die in het Engels “missing hole” heet (missend/leeg gaatje). Zoals de naam van deze kaartweef techniek al doet vermoeden ontstaat het patroon door bepaalde gaatjes in de weefkaarten leeg te laten.
Als je de inslagdraad dan met een contrasterende kleur doet, komt dat als het goed is mooi tot zijn recht. Echter vond ik het resultaat toen ik dat deed er lelijk en niet netjes uitzien. Ik vermoed dat dit komt omdat de inslagdraad van linnen was, als in het was ietwat stug en wou niet netjes meewerken.
Toen besloot ik om de inslagdraad met hetzelfde garen te doen als de schering draden.
Nu heb ik een mooi netjes lint met een wel heel subtiel patroontje.

Missing hole tape weaving
I decided it was time to make a woven tape now that I participate more regularly at festivals that require a believable level of historical correctness from it’s participants.
This tape would initially be one long tape that would be cut in several pieces: One for my viking distaff, another for in my hair and the rest to finish/decorate 2 dresses with.
To make it I gravitated to tablet weaving again, but with only one colour for the warp.
The pattern is established by leaving certain holes empty, and using a contrasting colour for the weft. This technique is very aptly called the “missing hole” technique.
This contrasting colour, did not work in this case, it looked very untidy and well… ugly.
Now I’ve learned not to use linen as weft when I have a wool warp, but that was the only contrasting colour thread I had that is fit to maintain historical correctness.
In the end I chose to use the same thread for the weft as I had already prepared for the warp.
Now I have a neat and nice tape, that has a very, very subtle pattern.
