A tale of two yarns
Here you see two yarns I’ve spun recently, and the way each of them went was rather different…
The purple one (Sockblend in purples by Spinspul) spun dreamily, just as I like it.
Plying it though was a whole different ball game.
The singles were spun all on one bobbin, so before plying it had to be separeted in 4 equal balls.
(I had forgotten that I had only 4 bobbins with my new spinning wheel …)
During the plying it was as if I got in one fight after another with the singles; tangles, pigtails, loops, and barf galore. These balls did definitely not want to play nice.
The blue tweed yarn (Combed top blend with merino, mulberry silk, and sari silk, by “Schaap en draak”) got a bit annoying to spin. This is because I was spinning this (just like the purple one) during my “bedtime spinning sessions”. Normally my mind gets all nice and calm during these sessions, and as a result falling asleep is faster and easier for me.
In spinning this batch of fibers I had to keep my mind awake, because the sari silk bits needed focussed attention. This resulted in me not enjoying spinning it as much as I could have, and falling asleep later.
As with the purple wool, I had also spun this singles all on one bobbin. So it also needed to be separated in equal balls, three this time.
I had expected the plying to go similar to that of the purple yarn, but lo and behold, it went smoothly until the balls got tiny, and bofore long I had to stop because it got tangled so fast and frequently. This last bit of plying from balls looks to me like a very regular occurence, not only because it lso happened with the purple yarn, but also how the singles behave in the tiny balls.
Reason engouh for me to buy extra bobbins for this new spinning wheel.
