Er is een vrouw in ‘mijn’ spingroep die, net zoals ik, geïnteresseerd is om haar handwerk kennis te vergroten.
Nu werd zij uitgenodigd voor een hele bijzondere lezing en workshop over vlas spinnen en ik mocht ook mee!
Deze hele interessante lezing werd gegeven door Christiane Seufferlein die veel vertelde over de flas geschiedenis en de bijbehorende tradities uit het gebied in Oostenrijk waar ze woont.
Daarna was het tijd voor de workshop vlas spinnen. Deze werd gegeven door Geeske Grietje.
Ik had al eens vlas gesponnen, maar dat was met kortere vlas. Dit was met lange vlas uit vlaspoppen.
We leerden hoe we de vlas kunnen prepareren, hoe je het moet oprokkenen en natuurijkk hoe je het moet spinnen.
Nu heb ik geleerd hoe ik een mooie dunne draad kan spinnnen van vlas, Yess!
Thuis wou ik er ook mee bezig, maar ik had een spinrokken nodig. Nu had ik nog een wandelstok met houtsnijwerk (gedaan door een kennis) die ik vrijwel niet gebruikte. Die, samen met een knop die ik er voor maakte, werd het een mooie spinrokken.
Na wat uitproberen heb ik dan ook een manier gevonden zodat ik thuis lekker vlas kan spinnen.
Tijdens ‘Middeleeuws Winschoten’ waar ik weer met mijn handwerk stond, heb ik nog geprobeerd om vlas met spinrokken en spintol te spinnen, maar dat gaf ik al gauw op. Het ging best aardig, maar ik had er geen plezier in.
De vlas die ik heb gesponnen en getwijnd met de spinnewiel moet nog afgewerkt worden, maar ik vind het er nu al mooi uit zien.

Flax
There’s a woman in the spinning guild I’m a member of that also likes to deepen her knowledge about needlecrafts.
She got invited to a very special presentation, and workshop about flax spinning, and I got to join her!
Christiane Seufferlein gave the incredibly interesting presentation about flax and it’s history, and tradiotions surrounding it, from the area in Austria where she lives.
After that it was time for the workshop. Geeske Grietje was in charge of this.
I’d already done a tiny bit of flax spinning, but that was with shorter flax. This, this was with the loooooong flax.
We learned how to prepare the flax, how to put it on the distaff, and of course how to spin it.
Now I know how to spin fine linnen thread!
Of course I wanted to continue with it at home, but I didn’t have a distaff yet.
What I do have is a walking stick with woodcarving (done by a friend) that I’ve hardly ever used.
I made a knob for on top of it, and now it’s a distaff!
After some fiddling about I found a way that I can comfortably spin flax at home, Yay!
This year I was also at a ren faire (Middeleeuws Winschoten) with some of the older needlecrafts I know.
I also had some flax with me and a spindle, but I did not enjoy it at all, so gave that up pretty quick.
The spinning wheel spun flax has come out great, and I have fun with it. Now it still needs to be finished, and I like the result already!
